Today, I’d like to talk about the different results you get when changing the color background.

In the image below, I’ve photographed the exact same thing but I changed the white background into a black one. Remember, with food/product photography, you need to emphasize on shapes and textures. Of course, here (a glass, wine and a bottle) you cannot really emphasize on texture since everything is smooth. You then have to rely on shape, colors and contrast.

Product photography and study of light - Difference in lighting and background

In the first picture, I used a white sheet illuminated by two flashes set @1/8 power. In order to emphasize on the curves of the glass, I used a black cardboard on the left. It gives a black outline to the glass. On the other hand, I used to softboxes set @3 and 9 o’clock to give a white outline to the glass and the bottle. However, I’m not completely glad with these pictures because I think I gave the glass and bottle a good shape and contrast but the product — wine– isn’t hightlighted.

I wanted something more dynamic, where you could see the product, its color and making somebody want to drink wine. However, since I liked the first picture with the white background, I made a picture while serving the wine.

Here is the final picture retained:

Food is probably one of the most challenging subject in photography. You can find tons of images of food everywhere: in magazines, on TV, on public notices, internet, restaurants, etc. There are so many you don’t even notice them anymore.
However, there pictures are mostly shot by professionnal photographers who have VERY carefully chosen the background,  placed the subject, the lighting(s) and the accessories.
In the next picture (that I’ve taken to illustrate my topic), do you notice the three light sources? Do you notice the texture of the orange skin? It doesn’t look flat, I’ve tried to add a three-dimensionality to a two-dimensional picture. Do you notice how my black background defines the shape of the orange?
